PREMIERE | M. McDonagh "The Pillowman"

21 Nov. - 31 Dec.

On the stage of the Keistuolių theatre is a new work that looks back on a young personality that is only starting to enter the adult life which is often forgotten in theatres. Keistuolių theatre actors Jurgis Marčėnas, Giedrius Kiela and Danas Kamarauskas, together with the youngest generation of theatre actors Džiugas Širvys, Matas Pranskevičius, Aistė Šeštokaitė and Lukas Auksoraitis, are on stage exploring the intricate story of two young brothers who open an unexpected and awkward view of the world in which we grow and mature to the audience. The provocative, awkward and world-acclaimed Irish playwright Martin McDonagh became familiar to the audience of Keistuolių theatre back in 2007 with Aidas Giniotis' performance "The Cripple of Inishmaan". Now McDonagh returns to this stage in the form of the two-part crime story "The Pillowman" which is directed by Ieva Stundžytė. The performance opens with an interrogation process that paints a grotesque and contradictory story of the brothers Katurjan (Matas Pranskevičius) and Michal (Džiugas Širvys/Danas Kamarauskas). The works of the writer Katurjan - nightmarish short stories full of brutal imagination and masterful puzzles - turn out to have unlimited freedom and impact; they are powerful tools capable of revenge and death."The Pillowman" is the story of two brothers and their complex experiences, which led to tragic, grotesque outcomes. It is an awkward, sharp and critical performance about creativity, freedom of speech, a dysfunctional family and the iron clutches of a dictatorial society. The work draws the viewer out of the comfort zone, raising questions about at first glance indisputable values and ethical norms. Are parents responsible for what their children become? Is the author responsible for the impact of his work on the person who sees or reads it? These questions will not be answered by the "Pillow", but after raising them, he will not allow you to calm down long after theatre doors are closed. The diverse creative team of the performance openly, originally and playfully immerses itself in the nightmarish stories of the "The Pillowman". The music of the performance is written by members of WhaleSounds, a band experimenting with atmospheric sounds, and their leader Gabrielius Zapalskis, who has composed music for theatre and film projects. Performance choreographer - dance teacher and creator Eglė Kančauskaitė, who actively creates with the youngest generation of Keistuolių theatre. Laura Luišaitytė, who has been creating for many years in many Lithuanian theatres, takes care of the set design and costumes, while Darius Malinauskas, the artist of Keistuolių theatre, holds the play of light and shadow firmly in his hands.Director - Ieva StundžytėSet designer and costume designer - Laura Luišaitytė Choreographer - Eglė KančauskaitėMusic - WhaleSoundsLight artist - Darius MalinauskasStarring: Vaidina: Aistė Šeštokaitė, Danas Kamarauskas, Džiugas Širvys, Giedrius Kiela, Jurgis Marčėnas, Lukas Auksoraitis, Matas PranskevičiusDuration - 3 hours 00 minutes (with an intermission)Premiere - 21 November 2019N-16PROJEKTĄ FINANSUOJA LIETUVOS KULTŪROS TARYBA

ABOUT NOTHING

14 Nov. - 01 Jan.

Have you ever wondered how theatrical performance is born? Do you think it’s actors repeating their lines over and over like mantras in the deepest nooks of their theatre behind closed doors, the director speaking in an authoritative tone, costumes made ready as if by magic, and a pensive composer working on the soundtrack? Nothing of the kind. Three actors, one playwright, one table and three chairs—welcome to the process of producing a play. Where does art come from? What makes creative work and death alike? What are the stories theatre tells and how? Critics in art websites, viewers in the theatre cloakroom, directors interviewed in shows on culture would say “its stories cover anything and everything”. Yet our play is about nothing. The play About Nothing, written and directed by Linas Jurkštas, is a comic, absurd and rowdy caricature of art, a self-ironic spotlight on creators. In a single evening, viewers see the actors in action from their first reading of the play to the day of the premiere; they see both the making-of of a performance and a story about a young man who has challenged Death, with a hint of the Italian commedia dell’arte. About Nothing is a peek at what happens behind the scenes with the creative process this time presented right there on the stage. It is a playful provocation and a deft balancing act where nonsense meets existential questions. Director, playwright: Linas Jurkštas Cast: Danas Kamarauskas, Jurgis Marčėnas, Gabrielius Zapalskis, Birutė Belada Tauterytė/Viola Klimčiauskaitė. Scenography: Ramunė Skrebūnaitė Music: Gabrielius Zapalskis Runtime: 2 hours 15 minutes (1 interval) Premiere: 25 January 2019 N-12 Thanks to UAB Aloritus for translating the description into English!

Nut bread

14 Nov. - 12 Mar.

Different generations are differently familiar with the movie “Nut bread“, which is laying down in the classical film and theatre foundation. “Vilniaus Keistuolių Teatras“ gives a fresh breath of air for this classical movie.  The director of the play Aidas Giniotis and different generation actors from “Vilniaus Keistuolių Teatras“ created open, a little bit painful, hilarious and extremely sad play for senior students, youth and for all the old generation who remembers the taste of the carefree days of life. This play is created by a short story, written by Saulius Šaltenis. The play tells a story about young boy from a small last century town, Andrius Šatas and his beloved Liuka. Their bright love story is obscured by their parents’ disagreement. The nut bread from Andrius uncle‘s Boleskovas hands – is a symbol of the most beautiful days of a happy childhood. For the main character, this symbol was the landmark of the conscious, carefree life that has lost its illusions.  The “Nut bread“, played by “Vilniaus Keistuolių Teatras“ actors, breaks free from nostalgic aesthetics of a romanticized village and turns to a more sophisticated picture of Lithuania cities in the seventies. Even if the young generation is limited to Soviet-era frames, they are already filled with the rhythm of European culture and music. Uncoincidentally the soundtrack of the play was chosen to be “The Beatles“, which dictated probably this period‘s the most reviling rhythm and spirit of Andrius Šatas. Every maturing person undergoes the inner drama, which is painted with the bright sadness and subtle irony of “Nut bread“. This play is dedicated for young people, which lives in ever-changing, a little bit cynical and pure love-denial environment, where sometimes it takes so long to allow yourself to say “I am not alone!“. DIAGNOSIS: COMPLETE BROWN-NOSE

17 Nov. - 01 Jan.

Single-action mono act performance for those who became just like the Brown-nose Mono act performance "DIAGNOSIS: COMPLETE BROWN-NOSE" (or - "I came, I saw, I couldn't") was directed according to director and writer Vytautas V. Landsbergis first book of stories and anecdotes, "Stories of Brown-nose", which was awarded as the best book for children of that year, but do not be fooled - this play is suitable for adults as well. Are you never in risk of becoming just like the Brown-nose? What are the signs of it, how can it be diagnosed, treated, etc. The answer to these and many other questions is sought by Brown-nose, who travells through many epochs - from the prehistoric times of Vytė Nemunėlis, through Soviet times, occupation, exile to the very present day. "The Brown-nose is the kind of slight craze that I wish that every person gets. This is the type of childhood where adults can stay without any fears. As a matter of fact, it is a point of contact with your childhood, which you keep carrying with you, even though sometimes it gets deeply hidden, sunk and buried inside. However, it should never be forgotten what was so great about your childhood, what supported you, because it then supports you in the simple everyday life as an adult," says one of the Brown-nose actors of the performance - Dalius Skamarakas. "The axe matched head," the Brown-nose folk proverb says. We hope that this performance will meet your expectations, needs and will open a new page in the pollinated bookshelf of your childhood.   Director - Vytautas V. "Grumbler Noble" is a performance by the founder, actor and director of Keistuolių theatre Aidas Giniotis for the little ones, which preserves the best Keistuolių theatre traditions of children's performances and invites viewers to delve into the imaginative story of the Lithuanian nobleman taking an odyssey around the world. As in many other children's  productions of   Keistuolių theatre, "Grumbler Noble" features songs performed by talented and well-known actors, and the engaging vivacious story leaves no small viewer without a smile.   This performance is a continuation of the trilogy of Giniotis' children's trilogy based on Lithuanian folk motifs. After more than a decade, "Grumbler Noble" joins the "Jonas Soldier", which appeared on the stage of Keistuolių theatre in 1993, "Mykolas the Fisher", which came later, and "Juzė the Sponger, which appeared in the theatre in 2002.   Like previous performances, "Grumbler Noble" is a story about a special man with a special name, which became for him a sign of fate and determined his further life. One day, a prominent Noble which lived in a Lithuanian village realized that his native land is too small and too bleak: neither houses, nor fields, nor people seem to match his noble origin. The only way out is to go to the wide world and find a decent profession that is appropriate to a person as prominent as himself. By passing through towns and villages, overcoming the widest seas, visiting  the most remote corners, the Noble got to meet the most interesting and strangest people, but he does not succeed in discovering his main goal - his true vocation. It is only when the whole world is measured in steps and upon return to the Lithuanian land it becomes clear to the Noble that the most noble and heart-sweetest land is not abroad, but in his own village with his friends and neighbours.   The XXXV Lithuanian Professional Theater Festival WE PERFORM FOR THE FARMERS: THEATRE LIKE BREAD award FOR THE BEST FESTIVAL PERFORMANCE FOR CHILDNRE and THE YOUNG SPECTATOR SPECIAL PRIZE was awarded to the actor Jonas Šarkus for the portrayal of Grumbler Noble. Donald Harold G. Bisset (1910-1955) was a famous English writer, actor, creator of TV shows, author of cartoon scripts. He was a legendary English writer, who created more than forty books for children. Written in the style of nonsense, the fairy tales flickered with all sorts of oddities and surprises, causing the readers to laugh and wonder, because the ingenious author portrays the ordinary world in a frivolous, "upside-down" way. His short and strange tales were reborn in the first productions of Keistuolių theatre performances for children - "Next Time" and "Upside Down". Everyone is already familiar with the snail Olaiva, the piglet who wanted to fly, the raven Albertina, the angry uncle, the grasshopper Sandy and many other characters, but there are still a lot of weird fairy tale residents who want to make friends with children. So, geese William, ant Marta will share their strange stories and adventures, cow Taškė will perform a song of her own making while a beetle and bulldozer named Bačas will show off his endurance. With a team of young actors, the director will try to transform the unexpected Bisset's fairy tales into an unforgettable musical journey that will be open to both children and adults. After all, we all sometimes miss miracles or songs, we all hide from strange fears or look for new friends. That is what goose Willie also wondered about: "How amazing would it if someone told tell me "Beep Beep!" The pigeons cooed, the ducks quaked, and the crows clucked from the top of the trees. But no one, absolutely no one said to him: "Beep Beep." Actors: Judita Urnikytė, Danas Kamarauskas, Mantas Zemleckas, Jonas Šarkus, Jurgis Marčėnas, Gelminė Glemžaitė.   Script writer and director - Aidas Giniotis Stage designer and costume designer - Ramunė Skrebūnaitė   Performance is recommended for children from 4 to 13 years of age.

EDDIE AGGREGATE, OR THE LIFE AND DEATH OF THE IMMORTAL OPTIMIST

10 Mar. - 01 Dec.

Odd Men TheatreEDDIE AGGREGATE, OR THE LIFE AND DEATH OF THE IMMORTAL OPTIMIST I directed by Aidas Giniotis The Odd Men Theatre (Keistuolių teatras) production of a musical mystery playEddie Aggregate or The Life and Death of The Immortal Optimist combines live experimental rock music with extravagant steampunk-style set design, and an original drama, centered around the story of the fate of someone Eddie Aggregate - a mystical figure in a dystopic world. In an unknown age of some post apocalyptic time, in different parts of the world, relics are found which originate from a mythical man - the legendary prophet Eddie Aggregate - famous for his perennially happy life. In the joyless society of the future, these relics amount to a miracle which kindles the hope of experiencing the feeling of happiness once again. The seekers, who set out to solve the mystery of this ever-smiling prophet, find Eddie Aggregate's psalm-book, and it reveals to them his true life-story, which turns out to be no less tragicomical, in a commonplace way, than that of any other human being.   The work of Aidas Giniotis, the director, is complemented by the musical side of theOdd Men Theatre (Keistuolių teatras) creative team, who, through their language of musical experiments, subtle absurdity and irony, convey the multi-faceted nature of this mythologized personality's life. The creators of the rock phantasmagoria employ some unusual forms of theatrical expression as they delve into the fringes of life and the approaches of death, while raising essential questions about certain fictions that come up in society and make its members pay the price.   Director: Aidas Giniotis Cast: Aidas Giniotis, Darius Miniotas, Judita Urnikytė, Ieva Stundžytė, Jonas Šarkus, Giedrius Kiela, Gabrielius Zapalskis, Matas Praskevičius Set and costumes: Ramunė Skrebūnaitė Light designer: Darius Malinauskas Sound designer: Ignas Juzokas
